Biography
Medad was born on 19 August 1638 in Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut, the son of Eltweed Pomeroy and his wife Mary. [1] [2]
He married Experience Woodard, daughter of Henry Woodard and Elizabeth Mather on 21 November 1661 in Dorchester, Suffolk, Massachusetts. [3] They had 7 children.
He married Abigail (Strong) Chauncey, daughter of Elder John Strong and widow of Reverend Nathaniel Chauncey, on 14 September 1686 in Northampton, Massachusetts. [4] They had one child, Samuel.
He married Hannah (Warriner) Noble, daughter of William and Joanna Warriner and widow of Thomas Noble, on 24 January 1705 in Northampton, Massachusetts. [5] [6]
Medad settled in Northampton, Massachusetts in 1659 and was granted tools and land to begin his trade as a blacksmith and gunsmith.
In Northampton, Medad was selectman (first elected in 1675 and re-elected twenty-seven times), representative to the General Court, Deacon of the church, town treasurer, town clerk, associate justice of the county of Hampshire and commissioner to the United Colonies. He also served in the militia during King Philip's War and took part in the Turner Falls Massacre.
In 1672, he brought his father, Eltweed Pomeroy from Windsor to reside with the family in Northampton. By 1686, he had accumulated a considerable amount of real estate in the town. He resided on an acre on Meeting-House hill where he lived until his death.
He passed away on 30 December 1716 in Northampton, Massachusetts. [7] Medad is buried in Bridge Street Cemetery, Northampton, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States with a death date of 30 December 1716.[8]
He appears on a Sons of the American Revolution application in 1928 through his son Joseph Pomeroy who is also listed. [9]
The anvil Medad used as a blacksmith survived in the family for many generations and eventually found its way into the Northampton Historical Museum, where it is on display today. [10]
