Biography

Magdalena was born about 1879. She also used the name Helen, as on the marriage license of her son Nick Jr. [1]

1922 Immigration

Magdalena Wilhelm arrived at Ellis Island August 19, 1922 on the Lapland, which departed from Antwerp, Belgium. Her place of residence was given as Szechany, Jugoslavia, her ethnicity as German, and age as 42. She was accompanied by Nikolaus (42), Anna (18), Nikolaus (16), Stefan (12), Magdalena (4), Peter (1). All were from the same residence and of the same ethnicity.[2]

1930 U.S. Census

In the 1930 Census summarized for the Nicholas Wilhelm page, there are two "Helens" the same age as the Magdalenas in family records. I am making the assumption that the family anglicized the name Magdalena to Helen.

1940 U.S. Census

In 1940, Magdalene's husband Nicholas Wilhelm and his family lived at 3844 Pennsylvania Ave. in Detroit. They had both completed six years of school. Peter had graduated from high school and Helen had been to high school for one year. Nicholas worked as a line assembler in a "stamp company," and earned $480 working 20 weeks that year. Peter had evidently just found a job, as he had been seeking work and it was stated that he was a "new worker" and did not name the kind of company and had not earned any wages. Helen was a beauty operator in a beauty shop, and earned $600, working throughout the last year. None of the family members were citizens. There was also a family of lodgers staying at their home, Paul and Virginia Nadera and their 2-year old son, Phillip. The Wilhelm family included:

  • Wilhelm, Nicholas, age 60, born in Germany.
  • Magdalene, age 61, born in Yugoslavia.
  • Peter, age 19, born in Yugoslavia.
  • Helen, age 24, born in Yugoslavia. [3]

1943 Death

Magdalena Pomorisatz Wilhelm was buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Detroit Michigan March 9, 1943, Sec 24, lot 760, space 2.[4]
