Declaration in order to be placed on the pension list under the Act of 18 March 1818 South Carolina Greenville District
On this fourteenth day of October 1830, personally appeared in open Court being a Court of Record of Common Pleas and General Sessions of the Peace for the District of Greenville in said State, Thomas Ponder Resident in said District aged about sixty-five who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following Declaration in order to obtain the provision made by the acts of Congress of the 18 March 1818 and 1st of May 1820, that he the said Thomas Ponder enlisted for the term of eighteen months sometime in the latter part of the summer of the year 1782 to the best of his recollection that he cannot state precisely the month or day as his memory from old age has become so bad that he cannot state the precise time....
To the questions2 propounded by the Court the applicant answers as follows –1st he was born in the State of Pennsylvania on Delaware River in the year 1765, March 22nd –2nd he has no record of his age at this time -- 3rd -- he lived in Caswell County North Carolina when he volunteered and also when he enlisted -- 4th he first volunteered for a tour of 3 months and shortly after the expiration of that time volunteered a 2nd time and then enlisted for eighteen months....

Thomas served in the military during the United States Revolutionary War, died on 13 Feb 1837 in South Carolina, and received a penson for said service.[4]
