Biography

Daniel Pool was born in April 1811 in Montgomery, Orange County, New York. He was the son of Daniel and Hannah (Hatheway) Pool. About 1821, his father relocated the family to Tompkins County, New York. [1]

Daniel became a blacksmith and farmer. He was at Mottville (now Caroline) for 4 or 5 years, was in Factoryville (now Waverly), and then settled in Halsey Valley in Tioga County where he appeared on tax assessment rolls in 1849. [2]

He first married Mary Brewer of Owego, whose linage is unknown. Family sources say they had three children: Edward, Frank, and Jane. However, another family record indicated they had two more children: Laura and an unnamed son who went west, The son has since been positively identified as William Henry Pool Johnson (1836-1902). [3] [4]

Mary died sometime before 1843. Daniel married Marinda Manning of Danby, New York, and they had three children: Mary, George and Laura. [5] By 1850, they were in the Town of Barton in Tioga County, New York, where they were living in a log home. [6] [7]

By 1860, the family was in Caroline Center, in Tompkins County, where Daniel continued the blacksmith trade for many years. [8] [9]

In July 1870, Daniel was farming with his son George in Halsey Valley (Town of Barton). Marinda had died in March of consumption [tuberculosis] and, in April, Daniel had sold his 25 acres of land on lot 22 in Caroline to John K. Miller for $1600. [10] [11] [12]

On their farm in Barton, the Pool family had 2 horses, 3 milk cows, 5 sheep and 2 swine. They produced 200 bushel of Indian corn, 100 bushel of oats, 50 bushels of buckwheat, 10 bushels of potatoes, 100 pounds butter, and 4 tons of hay. [13]

Sometime after 1870, Daniel married a much younger woman, Fanny M. (Galpin) Stevens. She was the widow of Amos Stevens, a Blacksmith in Candor NY. She ended up in Halsey Valley working as a servant in a home near the Pool family. [14] [15]

Daniel died in Halsey Valley on May 21, 1881. His burial location is unknown. [16]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Daniel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Daniel:

Just wanted to say, really nice job on putting the Pool family info out there. Really nice, complete, well sourced (these days people link to an Ancestry.com tree and call it good). Takes a lot of time and gray hair to get it right. But well worth it.

You cousin, Debbie

(BTW, I think the note you placed in the source section regarding my hunch can be upgraded to pretty firm at this point, the DNA don't lie)

Hi Debbie,

Thank you for your kind comments -- I'm a source nut! I've finally gotten around to update this profile and that of William Henry (Pool-2616) to reflect the positive identification. Sorry it took so long, we are in the midst of moving.

Dee
