Three Basill Pooles in succession spelled their name with two ll's. Russ Poole's research [1] indicates that Basill II termed himself 'Jr" during lifetime of Basill I, and then became "Sr", while Basil III then became "Jr." Basil III signed by mark. This and other connections strongly suggest a father/son/grandson connection.
Basils I, II, & III are assumed to be grandfather, father and son but there is no documentary evidence. The fact that both Basil I and Basil II signed their first name with the unusual spelling of two 'l's makes for a close tie and Basil I appears to be the only Poole of the right age in the area. Basil III is presumed to be the son of II since he purchased the tract of land previously mortgaged by Basil II. [1]
1692, year of birth of Basill I calculated from listing of "Bazil Poole" as age 55 in 1747 [2] Place of birth was not specified.
Some popular genealogies show Basill Poole as a child of Johanna Duvall and Richard Poole. However, based on the age he gave in a deposition years later, Basill Poole was born about 1692, which would make him too early to be the child of Johanna Duvall, born 1685, and her husband Richard Poole, born 1683.
It is not known if Basill was born in America but we can venture a guess. He was listed in a document as a taylor (tailor), a trade of some necessity in the colonies and after his marriage to Lowis Shipley he acquired more land than necessary to work at this occupation. His wife's grandfather, Adam Shipley, came over as an indentured servant in 1668, received 50 acres for his service in 1675 and by 1687 had acquired about 1000 acres. Our guess might be that Basill was brought over as an indentured servant and it is possible Adam Shipley or one of his sons might have paid his passage. If he came over at the age of about 25 (or in 1717) he would have had time for his 7 years of service before his marriage to Lowis Shipley . [1]
Mike Marshall estimates Basil's birth about 1704 in All Hallow's Parish, Anne Arundel County, Maryland [3]
Mike Marshall also notes that Basill was the son of Richard Poole, born before 1683 and Johanna Duvall, who was born before 1687 in All Hallow's Parish, Anne Arundel County, Maryland (and died 19 Mar 1710/11, All Hallow's Parish, Anne Arundel County, Maryland (Age > 24 years). They were married on 12 Aug 1703 in All Hallows Parish, Anne Arundel County, Maryland [3]
24 Nov 1724 married Lowis Shipley, St. Annes Parish, A.A.Co., MD. Wife's name spelled "Lowis" twice in Basill's will, but elsewhere spelled Loys or Lois.
On 24 November 1724 in St. Anne's Parish, Anne Arundel County, Maryland, he married Lois Shipley, b. Abt 1708, St. Anne's Parish, Anne Arundel County. Maryland, d. Aft 1767, Anne Arundel County, Maryland (Age ~ 60 years) Her name is recorded as "Loys" shipley. [3]
At the southern edge of Pool's Chance was Red House Tavern, The tavern, which is believed to date from the mid-1700s, contains an unusual V-shaped double fireplace. The Red House Tavern is described in the book Travels of a Frenchman in Maryland and Virginia, by Ferdinand M. Bayard, who visited there in 1791. Moreover, George Washington is said to have slept at the Red House Tavern. Some historians speculate that it might have been built by Basill Poole. The Red House Tavern, now a private residence, stands today near Cooksville, just north of the intersection of MD Rte. 97 and I-70. Source: Russ Poole, "First Generation of Our Pooles in America" [1]
In 1747 "Bazil Poole" was deposed in an Anne Arundel County court case, and stated that he was aged 55 at the time, thereby indicating a birth year of 1692. [2].
On 13 June 1753 Basil Pool was bonded to keep Eliza Poole's bastard child from being a charge of the county. [5]
5 Dec 1753 Bazel Poole receives a patent for 200 acres of Poole's Chance, Anne Arundel Co. [6] Poole's Chance was then willed to his son Samuel by Basill I, so the Bazel involved is most likely the older Basill I.
The will of "Basil Pool" was written 17 April 1769 and proved 6 August 1770 and conveys:[3]
Basill Poole died Bef 6 Aug 1770. Will [7] signed "Basill Poole", names only wife Lowis & sons Samuel and Charles. Wit Francis Mercier, Thos. Hobbs and James Barnes of Peter [8]. However other Pools in area of appropriate ages to be sons of Basill I included Basill Jr, Peter, Richard, William & Henry. [1]
Though Samuel and Charles were the only children named in the will of Basill I it is likely that there were other sons who had left the nest and may have already received some form of inheritance or at least were out on their own. Basill's will was made in 1769 just over a year before his death at the age of about 78 years. Except for 20 lbs. bequeathed to Charles, the entire estate went to Lowis with the stipulation that it was to pass on to Samuel upon her death. One can assume that with the late date of the will that he was providing for Lowis with the plantation being managed by Samuel. Documents show that there were other Pool/Pooles in the area of the appropriate ages to also be sons of Basill I. These candidate sons were Basill Junior, Peter, Richard, William, and Henry. [1]
April 15,1773 Lois Poole conveyed her interest in "Poole's Chance" to her son Samuel. In 1774 Samuel conveyed "Poole's Chance" to John Hood & in 1775 he conveyed 200 acres "Poole's Chance" to John Hood & his wife Mary relinquished her right to that land. There was no mention of Basil, Jr in Col. Fam of A.A.. (Source: Iva Wehland) Samuel owned Poole's Chance in 1783 Assessment.

Surmised to be sons -- see their respective notes.
Some genealogies also show the following as children, however, no evidence or further details for them has been seen.

Chronological Listing of Items About Basil Poole*
Basil's son Peter has an estimated birth year of 1747, which would fit with his wife's date of 1748. His first child was born in 1773, so his parents cannot have been married in Yorkshire in 1768. Their probable marriage is the source given below, Basil Poole and Loys Shipley, Annapolis 24 November 1724.
I cannot find any evidence of them coming from Yorkshire.
Lois seems to have been born in America.
