Isabel, or Isabella, was born in 1858[1] in Melbourne, Yorkshire, England, and was baptised nearby in Thornton.[2][3] She was the daughter of John Poole and Elizabeth Holliday and lived in Melbourne with her parents in 1861.[4]
In 1871 the Pools lived in Portington, Yorkshire.[5] At the time of the 1881 census Isabel worked as a domestic servant for the Hammond family in Hessle, Yorkshire.[6]
She married William Carr in Thornton in 1884.[7][8] By 1891 the Carrs lived in Hunslet, west Yorkshire, where William worked as a school caretaker.[9] By 1901 he also worked as a church verger and the Carr family lived in Holbeck, Yorkshire.[10] In 1911 they lived on Northcote Road in Hunslet.[11]
