Biography

Elisha Poole (1792–1865) was a planter, surveyor, and magistrate from Spartanburg County, South Carolina, one of several sons born to James Poole (1762–1830 × 1840) and Rebecca (Stovall) Poole (b. ca. 1764). Elisha married Harriet Wells (1795–1871), a daughter of Captain Thomas Wells (ca. 1765–1853) and Patty (Underwood) Wells (ca. 1765–before 1840) and owned several hundred acres on Richland Creek, Lawson’s Fork Creek, Wells Creek, and other branches of the Pacolet River in eastern Spartanburg County. He served in Captain White’s Company of the 1st Regiment of the South Carolina Militia during the War of 1812. He chaired the Nominating Committee for the Nullification Party of Spartanburg County in 1833, was a member of Goucher Creek Baptist Church, and donated the land on which Zion Hill Baptist Church and cemetery were built. Elisha and Harriet were originally buried in the old Poole family cemetery that once occupied a site where Hillbrook Forest grew up around Webber Road in the early 1960s, but their remains were relocated to Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in 1961.
