Thomas "Tommie" Andrew Poole was born on April 29, 1893 in Atlanta, Georgia. She was the youngest child of J J L Poole and Laura (Stubbs) Poole.
Her name was chosen in honor of her uncle Thomas A Poole who died two months before Tommie was born. When she turned out to be a girl, her parents kept the male-sounding name anyway.
