Biography

Mary E. Poole was born in December 1848 in Danby, Tompkins County, New York. [1] She was the daughter of Thomas Pool and Margaret (Bloom) Pool. [2]

Her parents were farmers and made several moves within Tompkins County, York. In April, 1879, they purchased a farm on South Hill in the area of Buttermilk Falls, where they were located in 1880. [3]

Mary remained single. After the death of her father, she remained on the farm on South Hill in Ithaca with her brother Arthur and sister Susan. They were still there in 1915. [4] [5]

About 1918, Robert H. Treman wanted to purchase the Poole land near Buttermilk Falls. Treman took an active interest in developing parks throughout the State. He acquired sites at his own expense and then donated the lands to the State as a gift from his wife Laura and himself. [6]

Mr. Treman was successful in purchasing the Poole land on March 30, 1918.
