When Edwin married Janet White on December 15, 1888 both said they were Baptists.[4] The couple’s first child was born in Saint John[5] and three more were born in Chelsea, Massachusetts.[6]
In 1881 Edwin at 15 years of age and his father were both described as nail cutters.[1] At his marriage he said he was a mechanic.[4] In 1891 Edwin reported his occupation as iron moulder.[5]
Edwin was naturalized as an American citizen on December 1, 1897[7] with a reported immigration date of November 29, 1891.[8] The family did not remain in the USA, however. On September 6, 1913 Edwin received title to a homestead in Alberta at Glengarden in today's Strathcona County, east of the provincial capital of Edmonton. His application stated he had obtained entry to the land in January 1908 and that his family had resided there with him from March 1909 to November 30, 1910. He said when absent from the homestead he had worked as a miner and a moulder.[9] In 1911 Janet, listed as married head of household, and the three surviving children are found in Edmonton, Alberta.[10] Edwin has not been located in that census.
Edwin is in 1916 shown as head of the household in Edmonton[6] although by then he was already in England having enlisted in March with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. In his attestation form he gave his occupation as mechanical engineer and his birth year as 1872 when in fact he was within 3 months of his 50th birthday. Edwin served as a sapper in France.[11] He died in Edmonton in 1955 after spending his latter days in a soldiers home there.[12]
