Biography

  • Rosalia Pope was born to Michael Pope and Gertrude Catherine Heicher Pope on November 25th 1877 in Williamsville, Erie, New York. She was the 11th of 14 children born to Mich and Gertrude, 7 girls and 7 boys, Peter (1861), Elizabeth (1862), Anna (1864), Mary (1867), Barbara (1870), John (1872), Michael (1873), Joseph (1876), Carrie (1876), Nicholas (1877), Rosealia (1877), Frank (1879), Gertrude (1883), and Charles (1888). [1]
  • Rosalia was baptized on December 16th 1877 in Amherst, Erie, New York [2] according to the records of Saints Peter and Paul Church, Williamsville, Erie, New York.
  • Rose's younger brother Frank is born on December 28th 1879 in Amherst, Erie, New York [3] and is shown as 1/2 year old on the 1880 United States Federal Census page dated 5 June 1880 [4] [5].
  • In the 1880 United States Federal Census Web:[6] [7] [8] we see Michael and Catherine with 10 children including 2 year old Rose living in Amherst, Erie, New York where Michael works as a laborer as does son Peter and daughter Elizabeth is shown working as a servant.
  • Rose's sister Gertrude was born in June 1883 in New York State [9]
  • Rose's sister Carrie died on August 23rd 1886 in Amherst, Erie, New York [10]
  • Rose's brother Charles was born on September 17th 1888 in Williamsville, Erie, New York [11] [12].
  • In the 1892 New York, State Census [13] we find Michael (59) and Catherine "Gertrude" (50), Barbara (22), John (20), Michael Jr. (18), Rose (14), Frank (12), Gertrude (9), and Charles (5) living in Amherst, Erie, New York where Michael and John are laborers.
  • Henry Suckow and Rose Pope were married in Bowmansville or Williamsville, Erie, New York on October 20th 1896. The headline in the Buffalo Enquirer says Bowmansville and the headline in the Buffalo Morning Express says Williamsville. The articles agree the wedding was in the Catholic rectory performed by Rev. Father Phillips with Rose's brother Michael as best man [14] [15] [16] [17].

Henry is shown as a hotel keeper, Arthur works in steel apparently handling chemicals, Charles is a laborer/operator of some type, and Olive works in a shop.
  • In the 1925 New York, State Census [44] [45] the Suckow household consists of Henry (52), Rose (47), Elinor (20) , Frederick (17) and Rose's brother Charles (36). They are living on Genesee Road in Lancaster, Erie, New York where Henry is a hotel keeper and Charles is an electric crane operator.
  • In the 1930 United States Federal Census [46] [47] Henry and Rose are living on Genesee Road in Lancaster, Erie, New York in a home valued at $10,000.00 which they own. Henry is shown as a self-employed cafe owner.
  • Rose's brother Frank died on July 9th 1930 in Williamsville, Erie, New York [48]
  • Rose's brother John died on July 2nd 1932 in Williamsville, Erie, New York [49]
  • When asked in the 1940 United States Federal Census where they had lived in 1935 Rose and Henry said they were in the same place as shown in the 1940 United States Federal Census [50] [51] [52].
  • In the 1940 United States Federal Census [53] [54] [55] [56] Henry and Rose are living on Genesee Road in Lancaster, Erie, New York in a home in this census valued at $2,500.00 which they own. Henry is shown as a self-employed restaurant proprietor.
  • Rose Pope Suckow died on January 18th 1945 in Lancaster, Erie, New York [57] [58] with her husband Henry Frederick Suckow at a railroad crossing when their car was struck by a New York passenger train [59] [60]
