CHRISTIAN MOTHER and WIFE
A contributor to the Christian Guardian, W S Griffin, refers thus to the late Mrs CLEMENT, mother of Mrs BIRNIE: ---
"Mrs Mary C CLEMENT was the daughter of the Rev John POPE, Wesleyan missionary in the West Indies, where she was born, and the sister of the Rev W B POPE, D.D., so distinguished throughout Methodism as a masterly theological writer.
In her early womanhood she lived in Plymouth, England and while living there was married to the late Rev Edwin CLEMENT. Bro. CLEMENT passed away to his reward a quarter of a century ago, and consequently was unknown to the present generation of Methodists, but in his day and his his ministerial labors, he was widely known and everywhere greatly beloved and honored.
In all the varied experiences involved in a ministerial life of 40 years, Sister CLEMENT was his constant support as a counsellor in times of perplexity and a comforter in times of sorrow. Her husband was indebted to her possibly more than he knew for the success which crowned his service in all his circuits. Her natural reserve made it impossible for her to be conspicuous in social gatherings or church conventions, but her beautiful example as a Christian and a Christian minister's wife, her prudence, wisdom and diligence in the work of the church, her faithfulness and devotion to all the interests of her family life, and the unquestioned power of her spiritual life pervaded every community in which she lived.
Her sons have risen to eminence in the circles of social and civil life of the country and her daughters to highest esteem for their womanly, Christian qualities.
At an advanced age, at the home of one of her daughters, in the perfection of Christian experience and fulness of Christian hope, she passed away to her everlasting rest."
