Biography

James was born in 1885. He was the son of Davault Pope and Elizabeth "Betty" Fisher.[1]

He worked in a cotton mill in Cherryville, North Carolina, eventually becoming an overseer.[2][3]

He was married twice. He first married Etta Bridges in 1902.[4] She died January 11, 1918, and he married Georgia Anne Cline on December 31st that same year.[5]

With Etta he had six children:

  • Essie Drucilla Pope[6]
  • Edgar Harlan Pope[7]
  • James Alvin Pope[8]
  • Gaither Colon Pope[9]
  • Caroline Eunice Pope
  • Minnie Pope[10]

With Georgia he had six more children:

He died of a heart attack at his home in Cherryville, NC in 1957.[17] He is buried in Cherryville City Cemetery.[18]
