Biography
Mary Pope was born in 1834 in Cutcombe, Somerset, England to Robert Pope and Mary (Heard) Pope.
Mary Pope, daughter of Robert, an innkeeper, & Mary, was christened on 24 Aug 1834 at St John's in Cutcombe.[1][2]
In 1841 Mary Pope (age 6) lived at the Poult Inn in Cutcombe with her father Robert (45, Publican), mother Mary (42), and five siblings: Fanny (13), Robert (11), Sarah (8), George (4), and an unnamed baby girl [Christian] (3 weeks), as well as her grandmother Sarah Pope (91, Pauper).[3]
In 1851 Mary Pope (age 16) lived at the Pult Inn in Cutcombe with her father Robert (55, Innkeeper), mother Mary (51), and two sisters: Sarah (19) and Christian (9).[4]
Mary Pope (age 21, residing at Cutcombe, daughter of Robert Pope, Innkeeper) and William Sedgbeer [aka Sedgebeer] (age 20, Lab, residing at Cutcombe, son of William Sedgbeer, Lab) were married on 26 Jan 1856 at St John's in Cutcombe.[5][6] The marriage was registered in Williton, Somerset in the first quarter of the year.[7]
According to the 1911 census, Mary was the mother of 5 children (4 who were still living and 1 who had died by that time). No birth record for a fifth child has been located, but there was a long gap between William and Thomas when another child could have been born.
In 1861 Mary Sedgebeer (age 25, Labourers Wife) lived in Withypool, Somerset with her husband William (23, Agricultural Labourer), son William (4), and lodger William Hayes (67, Labourer).[8]
In 1871 Mary Sedgebeer (age 35, Agricultural Labourer Wife) lived at Gibbs in Withypool with her three children: Thomas (6), Mary (4), and James (2).[9]
In 1881 Mary Sedgebeer (age 48, Carriers Wife) lived at a cottage in Exton, Somerset with her husband William (43, Carrier & Poulterer) and three children: Thomas (17, Carriers Son), Mary (14, House Assistant), and James (12, Carriers Son).[10]
In 1891 Mary Sedgbeer (age 55, Assistant) lived in Winsford, Somerset with her husband William (53, Baker & Grocer), daughter Mary (24, Assistant), son James (22, Assistant), and two servants: Blanche Quick (15, General Servant) and Ernest Hale (13, General Servant).[11]
In 1901 Mary Sedgebeer (age 66) lived at the Bakehouse in Winsford with her husband William (63, Baker & Farmer).[12]
Mary's husband William Sedgbeer passed away in 1904.
In 1911 Mary Sedgebeer (age 76) lived in Highbridge, Somerset with her son James (42, Clerk in Somerset & Dorset Railway Works) and four grandchildren: Norah Annie (13, School), Cyril (11, School), Eric M J (8), and Harold N (6) - although Mary was widowed, the details for married women had been filled in: she was the mother of 5 children (4 still living and 1 who had died).[13]
Mary Sedgebeer passed away in 1918, aged 83 years. Her death was registered in Dulverton, Somerset in the second quarter of the year.[14]
