Jane was born in 1819. (Whether her surname at birth was in fact Popham is unknown. Though put forth by several unsourced genealogies, there is little evidence of this. In November 1815, a William Popham, who may have been a relative is a member of the household.). Jane married James Moore Fulton sometime prior to the birth of their son Samuel in about 1844. Jane was born in Kentucky and her children Samuel and Jane in Arkansas. In 1847, Jane was widowed. In June 1850 Jane married F. M. Stovall in Lamar County, Texas. [1] In 1850, Jane is enumerated on the federal census twice. First in Rusk County, Texas (on 2 Nov 1850) under the name Maria Jane Stovall with husband F. M. and children Samuel and Martha Jane Fulton. [2]. The following month, on 15 Dec 1850, she is again enumerated on the federal census. This time under the name Jane Fulton, as head of household with her two children Samuel and Martha. [3] Nonetheless, Jane is said to have had one child, George, with second husband Francis Stovall, born in 1852. Jane died shortly after George was born. In 1860, Francis has remarried, though Martha Fulton is still part of his household. [4] Samuel Fulton, however, is enumerated in the home of his half brother David Ward Fulton. [5]
