It is September 2020 and I am very new to family history. On Wikitree I have found new information about my paternal grandfather James Porter. I will also be looking into my mother's maiden name Butler. I appreciate it takes time to investigate.

Hi Margaret, and thank you for upgrading, 😊

I am very pleased to welcome you to the WikiTree family, your contributions will go a long way to joining the world together.

It is best to start with the New Member How-To pages, they will save you a lot of time and frustration.

I am here to answer any question you have, no matter how trivial you may think it is. There is no such thing as a silly question. Please add as much information as you can, it all helps to turn a “name” back into a person. I hope you enjoy the site as much as I do.

You mentioned that you don’t know much about your family tree yet. I assume you are new to genealogy.

No problem! Every genealogist is a beginner at some point.

Take your time, keep track of sources and ask questions. Check here for tips.

Happy tree climbing

Thank you Peggy for contacting me. I have a question - I appreciate I do need to do some reading about Wikitree being so new. I have been given information about my paternal grandfather and his family which has been fascinating to read. Is it possible to have more than one tree? I would like to explore my mother's side of my family.
Hi Margaret,

Could I ask why you might wish to create a separate tree? Perhaps you are researching an unconnected tree? At WikiTree our trees are collaborative which means that we all share one big tree and we collaborate on the profiles together. We don't have our own trees at WikiTree. It may look like a separate twig until you get to an ancestor that already has a profile but, at that point, the twig will suddenly be connected to a branch of the whole tree.

I hope this helps but if you're still unsure or have any further questions please don't hesitate to ask.

Kindest regards, Pam
