Biography

Mahala Jane (Porter) Ward was the daughter of Reverend Benjamin Porter and Elizabeth Abigail Blevins. She was the paternal granddaughter of Patrick Porter, Junior and Elizabeth Pendleton and the maternal granddaughter of Levi Blevins and possibly Mary Elizabeth Broughton.

Mahala was married to Solomon Ward (son of William Benton Ward and Elizabeth Meek).

Obituary

WARD, Mahala (Porter)

Mrs. Mahala Ward died Tuesday night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Malissa Banfield. She was in her 91st year. The funeral was held Thursday morning at the Baptist Church. Rev. Stratton of Banner, KY assisted by Rev. B. F. Hyde, conducted the services. Interment in Fulkerson Cemetery followed.

Mrs. Ward had enjoyed good health until about 2 months ago, since which time she was confined to her bed.

She was born in Martin County, Mar 20, 1834, a daughter of Rev. Ben Porter, a Baptist preacher. When barely 15 years old she was married and her husband died at age 47.

Besides Mrs. Banfield she is survived by another daughter, Mrs. Sam Hannah of Crum, WV and 3 sons A. J. Ward of Ashland, Ali and Harmon Ward.

She is a sister of Dr. Porter, who died in Louisa several years ago. Mrs. Ward joined the church in early life and had lived a consistent Christian life ever since.
