Alexander is a son of Mariner & Susan Porter. Alexander married Janet Abigail Sweet on 1871 in Windsor, Hants, Nova Scotia. He was listed as a carpenter (age 21). She was 23. Both were living in Windsor. Four children have been identified:

Thomas Albert (b. 1880)
James Clifford (b. 1883)
He had passed away by 1891.

1881 census lists Alexander Porter (age 32; machinist) living with Abigail (age 33) and 3 children: William (age 8), Ivernia (age 2), & Thomas (age 9 months; born in July). They were living in Windsor [3].
