Biography

This profile is part of the Porter Name Study.

Mary Porter was born about 1813, daughter of James Porter (1783– ).

A possible but unconfirmed birth for Mary is that she is the daughter of James Porter & Mary Petrie, was baptised on 29 May 1813 in Leslie, Aberdeen, Scotland.[1]

Mary allegedly married George Mortimer (a Druggist, born about 1810 in Scotland). Their son was George Mortimer (~1847–1911). ** see research notes.

Research Notes

On son George Porter Mortimers marriage certificate he names his parents as George Mortimer, occ. Druggist and Mary Mortimer (nee Porter) however no trace of a birth for George Junr can be found and no marriage for his reputed parents. The Family connection with Mary Porter is known because George Mortimer (Jnr) was raised by his Grandfather James Porter and his wife Jessie Adam (see 1851, 1861, census in sources), Jessie Adam was not Mary Porters mother.

In the 1851 census George (age 4), Scholar, was the grandson of James Porter in Deeside Road Cuparstone, Old Machar, Aberdeenshire.[2]

In the 1861 census George (age 13), Bleacher Ninen, was the grandaughter (granddaughter) of James Porter at Cuparstone Hogg & Co Ten House, Old Machar, Aberdeenshire.[3]
