Biography

Mary Ann's mother is not mentioned in the will of the Hugh Porter who died in 1808; nor is there any mention of a guardianship for a minor child. She is quite possibly the minor daughter in the estate papers of the Hugh Porter who died in 1813.

1850 - living in Cokesbury, South Carolina with Thomas and their ten children. Age 42.[1]

Doctor Thomas Reeder 4 Gary (Jesse? Esq., Thomas? Charles 1) was born in Newberry County, S. C, May 25, 1802. He was graduated from the Jefferson Medical College and for many years was one of the leading medical practitioners in his state. He was also an extensive planter and a large slave owner. He was a resident of Cokesbury, Abbeville County, S. C, where he settled soon after his marriage. He twice represented his district in the State Legislature and was a director of the Greenville & Columbia Railroad. "He was a highly public-spirited gentleman and took a deep interest in educational and religious affairs and was prominently identified with Masonic activities in South Carolina." He married in Newberry County, S. C, Dec. 13, 1825, Mary A. Porter, born in Williamsburg County, S. C, Jan. 26, 1808, daughter of Hugh and Mary Elizabeth (Witherspoon) Porter and a direct descendant on her mother's side of John Knox, the celebrated reformer. Doctor Gary died in Cokesbury, S. C, Mar. 19, 1852, at the age of 49, and his widow died there, April 10, 1881.
