Peter was born about 31 August 1864.[1]
In 1871 he lived with his family at Binniehill Hamlet, Slamannan, Stirlingshire. His parents, William and Jane were both 41, his father was a coalminer. Also in the family home were two older brothers William and George, age 15 and 13 both were coal miners. There was also an older sister Mary age 10 and a grandson William age 8. There were two younger brothers Robert and Alex age 3 and 1. Peter, the grandson and younger brother were listed as being born in Kilpatine, Ayrshire, the rest of the family were listed as born in Paisley, Renfrewshire. There is no hint about the parents of the grandson.[2][3]
By 1881 the family had moved to 4, Auchengray Row, New Monkland, Lanarkshire. His older brother George was still unmarried living with his parents, he and his father were still coalminers. Mary, Peter and Robert were all coal pit workers and Alex was at school. Father William and George are now listed as being born in Johnstowne, Renfrewshire. Peter is listed as being born in Kelpatrick, Dumbartonshire and the younger brothers as Slamannan, Stirlingshire.[4][5]
