Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Elizabeth (Posey) Awbrey was a South Carolina colonist.
This profile is part of the Awbrey Name Study.

It is likely Elizabeth was born a Posey. She was later married to Revolutionary War veteran Captain William Gordon. One of their sons was named Posey Gordon. After his death (before November 7, 1782 in South Carolina),[1] she married Philip Awbrey. The Poseys and Gordons were neighbors of the Awbreys.[2]

The Georgia Express carried the announcement of Philip’s death in May of 1809, indicating that he had suffered through a painful illness of nine months "with Christian fortitude" and that his death was a significant loss for all who had "the honor of his acquaintance." His widow Elizabeth was still living in Jackson County, Georgia in 1817.[2]

Gordon-6907 and Posey-1187 appear to represent the same person because: Discussion in Posey-1187 supports Posey as last name at birth; she was widow of Gordon when she married Awbrey. As such, born 1762 (in SC) & married Awbrey 1780 (in Gordon-6907) seems unlikely. Posey-1187 has Awbrey marriage as "before 1790 in South Carolina".
