  • Research of George K. Sanges, Jr., who interviewed Rene Simmons and Laura Hart, sisters of William, in the 1960's; images 7 and 8 of a set of scans of his Posey materials; George also had access to Mary Ann Silvey Posey Dodd's Bible.

Source list for Jesse at FamilySearch: https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/sources/LR4T-BXT Please see for full citations for the following references, and available images.

  • 1830 US Census of Carroll Co., GA. Page 219. Hezekiah Posey.

2 males 0-4, 1 male 20-29, 1 female 0-4, 1 female 30-39; household adjacent to Daniel Posey. This fits the family as handed down in the family, which would make Jesse one of the 0-4 males.

  • 1840 US Census of Union Co., GA. Page 9. Charity Jones.

1 male 10-14, 1 female 30-39, 1 female 70-79. If Charity was the 70-79 female, she would fit the 85-year-old Charity Jones living with one of the William Jones households in Union Co. in 1850. Jesse named his first two children William and Charity. This is circumstantial, but fits reasonably well. It's lamentable that the enumeration dates weren't recorded on each page. Speculation: Cealey may have turned 30 before the 1830 enumeration, but was still 39 in 1840.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Jesse by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jesse:

The marriage record removed from Sources was for Jesse Benton Posey, not for Mary Ann Silvey's husband. Jesse Benton Posey's wife in the source probably died before they had children (or they divorced), leaving him to remarry in 1868. There weren't two Jesse Poseys in Calhoun Co., AL at that time.

If anyone has come across an actual document with Jesse's middle name or initial, I'd like to see an image of it. As far as I can tell, the "B" is only found in family trees where people copy it off of each other. Other researchers probably confused references to Jesse Benton Posey of AL with this Jesse, as well as a J. B. Posey (actually John Brooks Posey) who lived in GA. No mention of Jesse by George Sanges ever included a middle initial for him. George apparently had access to Mary Ann's Bible since he referred to Celia Jones' death date as recorded in it.

Excerpts from research done in the 1950's, 60's, and early 70's by Jesse's grandson, George K. Sanges:

"Hezekiah Posey, born 1800 to 1810. Believe him to be my Great Grandfather (GKS). If him, his wife was Cealey Jones Posey. The 1830 Carroll Co. Ga. Census listed Hezekiah Posey, wife and 3 children all under age 5, 2 boys and 1 girl. My Grandfather, Jesse Posey, born in 1830 in Carroll Co. Ga. had 1 brother Lorenzo and 1 sister, Miranda."

"Conversation I had with Rene Simmons and Laura Hart, daughters of Jesse Posey -- each separately and before they conversed with each other. I asked each if they had ever heard of an Hezekiah Posey. They both answered, 'No', but when I asked if they had heard of a 'Zeke', assuming he probably was always called Zeke, they each answered, 'Yes -- Yes, I've heard of Zeke'."

"Great Grandmother Cealey (Perhaps Celia) Jones married a Posey, given name unknown. They had three children, two boys and 1 girl. ... When Jesse was 6 months old, Celia's husband took his three children and left home with his paramour and started for Alabama with a horse and wagon. Celia followed on horse-back, begging for the return of the children. When they got as far as Blount Co. Ala., with Celia still following, and after many threats to her life, he finally gave her the baby, Jesse Posey, then drove her away. ... After Jesse was grown, the further legendary tale is that he tried to locate his sister and brother. He learned his brother had been killed, his father was dead and his sister had been cared for by some family who had left and no further trace of them could be found."

"Jesse Posey, born March 21, 1830 married Mary Ann Silvey Oct. 7, 1855. ... Mary Ann was born Oct. 3, 1840 in Buncombe County, N.C. She died June 27, 1930, age 89. Grandfather Jesse Posey died in 1877 in Feb. or May in Blairsville, Ga. and I believe buried either in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Blairsville or in the Arkaquah Cemetery, which is the Bethel Church Cemetery in the Arkaquah Dist. of Union Co. Ga. "Jesse Posey was an 'old time' Doctor, administering to many of the people in his area. It is believed he had no formal medical training. One of his descendants still has his Dr. book. He served a short time in the service of the Civil War at Big Shanty, now known as Kennesaw, about 4 miles from Marietta, Ga. He no doubt was at Camp McDonald, the Confederate training camp there. He became ill and was discharged. Jesse and Mary Ann Posey owned their home near Blairsville, Ga. ... It was here where all their children were born, their youngest child, Tom Posey being born several months after Jesse Posey died."

"Sometime after Jesse Posey died, perhaps a year, Gramma Mary Ann Posey and her 9 children moved to Banks Co. by wagon and oxen probably, as later she sold oxen in Banks Co. They traveled much of the way over only make-shift roads, often having to stop and remove a tree from their path. Must have taken days. A neighbor went along to help over the difficult trail. That could have been D.W. Jones whom Naoma Posey later married. Gramma's oldest son Will had gone to Banks Co. before the rest of the family. On the trip a wheel came off the wagon, and all their furnishings came tumbling out of the wagon."

From "The Posey Family" by the late Dot Posey Johnson, who had corresponded with Dr. Franz A. Posey, a great grandson of Lorenzo Dow Posey, in the 1980's:

"Lorenzo did not die as a child. His father bound him out to Dudley Lofton and Lorenzo ended up living in Franklin County, MIss. A family by the name of Brown took Merenda [sic] to Tennessee. In his later life, Lorenzo and Merenda were reunited." [Cousin Dot found this on pg. 104 of Betty Drake Posey's book, "The Posey Family in America," which didn't include Miranda's name.]

"After Jesse's father's departure, his mother and Jesse moved to Blairsville, GA, 1840-1850. Jesse inherited his mother's estate. There is where he lived and married, and all his children were born."
