Biography

Sylvain was the third son of Dominique Pothier and Anne Surette. He was baptized on December 8, 1754 in Petitcoudiac Chapel.[1] He married Elisabeth LeBlanc on October 20, 1779 in Baie-Sainte-Marie, Nova Scotia. The marriage was validated on August 23, 1781 at Ste. Anne du Ruisseau, Nova Scotia by Fr. Mathurin Bourg.[2][3] Sylvain and Elizabeth had 12 children.[2]

He made his living as a farmer.[4]

Sylvain Pothier purchased 207 acres of land in Wedgeport from Pierre LeBlanc in July 1776. The selling price was four pounds (Deed Bk.1,p.277).[5]He had his home built on this property circa 1781-1800 at what is today 2173 Hwy 334 in Upper Wedgeport, overlooking the Tusket River on the east side, on a lane to the east of Route 334 . It is believed to have been the first frame house built in Wedgeport.[4]It can be judged to be the original Pothier home from evidences such as the will of Sylvain, dated 1824, which describes location, and also by the recollections of older people who always considered this structure to be the oldest in Wedgeport.[6]

Upon Sylvain's death in 1825 the property was deeded to his youngest son, Dominique.

Sylvain died on 29 March or May 1825 and was buried the next day, in the absence of a priest. His death was declared to the priest on 30 September 1825 by his son Joseph Mathurin Pothier.[7]

Research Notes

FAG has a different death date (unsourced). May 29 is death shown by Karen Theriot Reader, though no source attached to that date, either.(Bourque-573 11:39, 25 November 2018 (UTC))

In the death record added to the profile it is written that Sylvain died in the month of "May" but the spelling is difficult to decipher. It could also be March. The previous or following entries do not give any clues as to what might be the correct month. The transcription in Nova Scotia Archives is March. The place of death given by Marcel Walter Landry in his website is Ste-Anne-du-Ruisseau, which is near Wedgeport. http://mwlandry.ca/genealog/familygroup.php?familyID=F11255&tree=03 The place of death is not mentioned in the register.Cormier-1939 02:49, 4 January 2020 (UTC)
