Howard Potter was the son of Margaret Potter of Westport, Bristol, Massachusetts. His father is unknown.[1]. On December 15, 1805, his birth date was recorded as February 16, 1796, by William Almy, Justice of the Peace[2]
Howard's mother later married John Briggs of Kingston, Rhode Island, and had three children with him before she died.[3]
Howard was a 19th-century farmer in Dartmouth, Massachusetts.
He may have been apprenticed to a shoemaker in his youth, as his business records contain references to shoes made or repaired for local folks. It was a skill that few farmers possessed in those days.
In 1809, Potter, listed as a Westport, Massachusetts, resident, married Eliza Hathaway of Dartmouth, according to town records.
At his death in 1866, Potter was a well-off Dartmouth farmer, able to leave considerable property and personal goods to his three children.
