Mary's birth was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1886 in the Houghton Le Spring district.[1] In the 1891 census Mary (age 5), Scholar, was the daughter of John Potter in Flinton Hill Cottages, New Herrington, West Herrington, Houghton Le Spring, Durham, England.[2][3]
