James Henry Potter was born on Thursday, November 6, 1902, in Adair County, Missouri. He was the third of fifteen children born to James Henry Potter (Sunday, March 9, 1873 - Wednesday, September 15, 1954) and Sara Ellen "Sadie" Wiyrick (Monday. May 31, 1880 - Saturday, December 22, 1962). His father's occupation on the 1920 U.S. Census was listed as "day laborer odd jobs." His parents were married in 1896.
On the 1920 U.S. Census seventeen year old James' occupation was coal miner in Benton, Adair County, Missouri. In 1923 James, age twenty, married Frances M. Turnbough (1904-1959), age eighteen, at Quincy, Adams County, Illinois. They had two children: Ruby E. Potter (Thursday, February 5, 1925 - Sunday, June 14, 1925) and WIlliam R. "Billie" Potter (Sunday, June 26, 1927 - Sunday, October 17, 1993). In the 1930 U.S. Census James was listed as a fireman for the boat industry in Quincy, Adams County, Illinois. The 1940 U.S. Census lists him as a tractor driver.
James married Myrtle Leona McGilton on Saturday, June 22, 1940, in Macon, Macon County, Missouri. Myrtle was forty-two. James was thirty-eight. James remarried Myrtle on Tuesday, April 29, 1952, in Lancaster, Schuyler County, Missouri.
On Thursday, February 25, 1960, James, age fifty-eight, married Sarah A. Lear, age seventy-two, at Carthage, Jasper County, Missouri.
James passed away on Saturday February 15, 1975, in Carthage, Jasper County, Missouri.
