Biography

Robert Potter Jr. {III}, son of Robert Potter II (1702-) and Judith Clarke (1712-1806) was born 6 Mar 1732 at South Kingstown, Kings, Rhode Island. He was married to Abigail Gardiner on 5 November 1769 at South Kingstown, Rhode Island. [1] Charles E. Potter Jr. asserts the death of Robert Potter III to have been on 5 Feb 1772 in his text, Genealogies of the Potter Families and their Descendants in America page 20; [2] but offers no evidence to substantiate the assertion. However, Robert Potter, the husband of Abigail Gardiner, is named as a co-executor in the will of his father-in-law, George Gardiner, on 19 Jan 1783 thereby providing irrefutable proof that Robert Potter, husband of Abigail, was very much alive in 1783 and thereby fully refutes Charles Potter's 1772 death date assertion. The naming of Robert Potter as co-executor also infers that Robert Potter was still living in the South Kingston area on this 1783 date as he would need to be living in the community in order to perform the duties apropos to the position.

This profile presently (Nov 2023) asserts that Robert and Abigail Potter were the parents of two children, but no evidence has been offered to substantiate nor refute these assertions.

Research Notes

  1. ) 2023-11-25: The subject of this profile is Robert Potter Jr., who was born on 6 March 1732 in what was then South Kingstown, Kings County, Rhode Island (now Washington County). He is not to be confused with the Robert Potter (1748-aft.1830) of Richmond, RI, who was born on 9 May 1748 in Richmond, Kings County, Rhode Island (now Washington County). It is important to understand that several men named Robert Potter lived in Rhode Island during the 18th Century. Two of these Robert Potters, in particular, have been conflated. All efforts to identify their life events and relationships must begin with the understanding that, despite sometimes tantalizingly believable interpretations, there is a limit to what is known about these two men. James DiRisio has written an excellent study collecting and analyzing the available source information to de-entangle the two identities. Access to his original paper is available at FamilySearch as noted in the source citation. [7]
  2. ) 2021-07-22: Adjusted this profile to conform to the data in Torrey's book of marriages which affirms Abigail Robinson indeed married Robert Potter Jr.; therefore his father was named Robert Potter, NOT William Potter (1714-bef.1801) as had been previously linked in this wikitree profile. Refer to Robert Potter (1748-aft.1830), son of William Potter (1714-bef.1801), for a biography of this alternate Robert Potter identity.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Robert by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Robert:

I question the assignment of parents to a William Potter and Elizabeth Mosher. His father is more likely Robert Potter b. 7/26/1702 son of Robert Potter #33 N.A. Family hist for Hazard. Abigail Gardner's parents seem more likely to be George Gardner (Gardner6917 or Gardiner-378 married to Robinson-18193
posted by Howard Reynolds
I agree with Howard Reynolds' assertion that the father of this Robert Potter Jr. is Robert Potter (sometimes styled as "II" or "Jr.") who was born in 1702 and married Judith Clarke (b 1712), and am glad to see that the database has been corrected to reflect that relationship. Many issues remain with the relationships and sources for this Robert Potter Jr., however, and I will be systematically attempting to correct them. I will be citing primary and secondary sources and I apologize in advance if the changes adversely affect other family trees. There is too much misinformation about two men named Robert Potter who lived in Rhode Island in the second half of the 18th Century and the records need to be corrected.
