Excerpt from The Crane Family History
"Their mother was Sarah Potter Rogers. It is her miniature we have in the ugly widow's cap. She never saw her husband [William Rogers] after, she was twenty-three years old. He went to sea during the War of the Revolution, and his vessel was never heard of again, though he had done good work against the enemies of his country before.
"Sarah Potter Rogers' father, Dr. Gilbert Potter was appointed "Lieut. Col. of Western Regiment of Suffolk County, Long Island, Militia," by the Provincial Congress of New York, in 1776, and was associated with General Nathaniel Woodhull in protecting Long Island. (See Archives of New York, page 287.)"
