Biography

Joseph was born on November 25, 1760 in Narraganset, Rhode Island.[1]

Joseph Potter was a Private and a Sargent in the Vermont Militia. He enlisted at Pownal, Vermont on August 1776 and was in Capt. Joseph Briggs company. He was discharged in April 1777. He re-enlisted for three months in July 1780. He served against the Indians in Ohio for three months. He enlisted in Capt. Prather's company in 1781. He was appointed orderly Sergent. He enlisted in Capt John Cowan's Company for one months and was three months in Capt. Corn's Company. He served almost continually until 1783. He served under Capt. Wilis, John Little, Arthur Harbinson, John Harbinson, and Ebenezer Carry. Pension # 411648.[2][3][4]

Death

Joseph Potter passed away on August 1, 1840, in Huntington Township, Luzerne, Pennsylvania. He was buried at the Potter-Emory Cemetery in Luzerne county, Pennsylvania[5]

Will Settlement

Sale of the land, 89 acres & 94 perches, originally owned by Joseph Potter and gradually bought from each of the heirs by Brookins Potter, and sold by Brookins to Dr William E Barret on 13 June 1864 for $2,687 and 62 and 1/2 cents. Names each of Joseph's surviving children (11) and details the purchase of each of the heirs' portions of his land by his son Brookins. Two parcels having been sold by heirs to John Emory in 1841 and purchased by Brookins in 1845. Two of Joseph's daughters, (Mary) "Polly" and Almira had passed away prior to Brookins' purchase of their portions, and so their children are listed, as their heirs, in Brookins' purchases from them and their fathers. Research needs to be done before this merge is complete. Potter-7449 is attached to different parents.

Potter-7449 and Potter-13118 appear to represent the same person because: birth date and place of birth are the same and spouse is the same
