A different, immigrant Robert Potter was born c. 1609 in England, married to 1) Isobel (Unknown), 2) Sarah (Unknown) and lived at Roxbury in 1634, Portsmouth 1639, and Warwick 1642. He died before 14 May 1656 at Warwick.[1] This Robert Potter was no relation, and certainly not his father.
Unknown Origin
This Robert Potter is sometimes assumed to have been born in 1566 at Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire, England, the son of Thomas Potter and Isabel Sumner.[citation needed] Other parents have been proposed (See Research Notes).
The previous version of this profile assigned a middle name of "Ralph" to this person. However, in NONE of the contemporaneous sources does such a name appear. In addition, it was illegal for an English commoner in Elizabethan times to have multiple given names, so the notion that HE (unlike all of his peers) had a middle name. In addition, in that prior version he was identified as "Sir Robert Ralph Potter," but the marriage record includes no such title.
In addition, he identified himself as a "weaver" in his will (see below). And
Robert Potter wrote his will on 10 December 1630 at Newport-Pagnell, Buckinghamshire, England. He mentioned his wife, Elizabeth, and named his sons: Robert, Nicholas, Nathaniel, and John, and daughters: Susannah, Mary and Ann. Note: son Nathaniel was apparently not the identical Nathaniel Potter who emigrated to Rhode Island. (Why not?)
Extracted from a transcription of the Will of Robert Potter of Newport-Pagnell, Buckinghamshire, England, published by Donna Potter Phillips' "Potter Profiles."[5]

In the pres. of Richard Shull, Nicholas Potter and Robert Potter (Proved 5 April 1631)
Death
A Robert Potter was buried in the parish of Newport-Pagnell on 16 March 1630 [1631 on the Gregorian calendar],[3] no doubt the identical man.
Children
Robert and Elizabeth's children, (baptized in Newport-Pagnell):[3][4][6]
Thomas Potter, bpt. 10 Sep 1592;[7] must have died young
Thomas Potter, bpt. 25 Feb 1595; must have died young
Nycholas Potter, bpt. 1 Apr 1604 — went to Lynn, MA in 1634/35, then moved to Salem, MA in 1660
Robert Potter, bpt. 15 Sep 1606,[10] emigrated to Lynn, Massachusetts in 1630, d. 1655 at Lynn, Essex Co., MA[11] was in Massachusetts by 1634 — (not to be confused with Robert Potter who was featured by Robert C. Anderson: b. by about 1609 in England, an adherent of Samuell Gorton, lived at Roxbury, MA and then at at Warwick, Rhode Island where he d.1655/56 See Caution above)
Mary (baptized as Marie) Potter, bpt. 11 Dec 1608[12]
(disputed) Nathaniall Potter (order uncertain); named in his Father's will. Probably the Nathaniell Potter "son of Robart Potter," christened in December, 1616 at Stratford St. Mary, Suffolk. While this community is at some distance from Newport Pagnell, it was a center of the woolen trade in the early 17th century, so it would not be strange to find Robert Potter, the weaver, sojourning there for a time. Notably, this Nathaniell Potter fits nicely in a gap between the later children of Robert Potter chr. at Newport-Pagnell, and it makes him exactly the right age to have been admitted as a freeman in Aquidneck Island, in the Rhode Island Colony (1638). There appears to be some dispute about this claim.
Susann Potter, bpt. 18 Apr 1619[14][15] (Another transcript has instead her baptism date as 28 May 1619.[16]), disputed wife of John Anthony - please read the full analysis concerning the unknown name of John Anthony's wife and why this Susann Potter is not being listed as his wife, here: Unknown Susanna Potter Anthony.
Note: Two sons named Thomas must have died young. There is a burial record for one Thomas Potter, 9 Aug 1595.[citation needed]

Potter-13586 and Potter-37 appear to represent the same person because: Same name. Same place of birth. Same wife.
Death dates are very different; that makes me think that these are death records for two different Robert Potters, one of which probably was born much later than this man.
I am not familiar with the records for this family.
Potter-13586 and Potter-37 do not represent the same person because: Not enough provided evidence to support the claim that they were the same person. More research is necessary. Once documents are provided that can conclusively show that these men are the same person, then another merge should be proposed.
Potter-13586 and Potter-37 appear to represent the same person because: Although birth and death dates different they appear to represent the same person
This is bunk. The Potters of Newport-Pagnell were tradesmen, weavers and yeoman farmers. They were not knights or baronets, and were not entitled to be addressed as "Sir Robert" or "Sir Ralph." And if there was a Robert or a Ralph, he wasn't "Ralph Robert" or "Robert Ralph."
See the "Life Sketch" I posted on FamilySearch's FamilyTree site a little while ago. In particular, I propose that the obscure reference in the will to the devise of certain real property to Nicholas and Robert Potter is not (as in the above transcript) to "the far ff..... of my coppice fold lands," but rather to "the sursumredditio coppie hold lands...." Somehow I always knew that the oddities of 17th century English conveyancing that I studied in law school would come in handy some day, even if it turns out to be with regard to a man who was falsely identified as a ancestor of my honored 6th great grandfather Thomas Perrin of Hebron, Conn., and therefore is not actually in my line. See comments at Perrin-2484 about the fake Gustave Anjou pedigree of Thomas Perrin.
Elizabeth marshal-56 is still showing as a spouse of Robert Potter-37 although she has been merged elsewhere. Elizabeth Marshal-133 is the correct spouse.
Potter-37 and Potter-1469 appear to represent the same person because: All the information is matching, with subtle differences (i.e. - Missing Children)
Potter-1469 and Potter-37 do not represent the same person because: There is a mismatch of information. People are trying to match his son Robert (rhode island immigrant) to the father of the same name.
Potter-1469 and Potter-37 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, BD (one year apart), same marriage (see bios), same children (for instance, see youngest Susanna (b 1619/20).
DD disagree, but neither has appropriate source for death info (yet). Not a reason to hold up the merge. Better to work on one profile than two.
The will (and children mentioned) here is for Robert Potter of Newport-Pagnell, Buckinghamshire, England. Not to be confounded with the Robert Potter who emigrated to Massachusetts and Warwick, Rhode Island.
Therefore, am changing the Potter-84 unmerged match into a rejected match. Thanks!
The Robert Potter died 1656 in Warwick RI. His parents are unknown. Objections to disconnecting son Robert so that he can be merged into Potter-84 (bio there)?
Replacing this which I accidentally removed. The lists of children (comparing bio children to attached children) are very similar. The dates for Robert are an issue, but is it possible that 1469 is actually a mixture of two different Robert Potters (this one and Robert Potter-84)?
Let's work on this together. I am not familiar with this family. Thanks!

There is another Robert Potter, of Lynne, who settled in Portsmouth RI. Perhaps this is him.
