Biography

William was born 17 May 1849. He was the son of Mathias Pounds and Ruana Beakley. He was one year old when he was enumerated with his parents in his grandmother's household in Scioto Township, Ohio.[1] He lost his mother when he was only four, and his father petitioned for his guardianship.[2] He inherited a third portion of just over 73 acres of land, which his mother received from her father.[3] Court records show that his father successfully petitioned the court to sell this property, "in order to raise means to maintain & educate" he and his sisters.[4] The property was duly appraised, advertised, and sold to Richard Colvin for $666.66 ⅔ on 26 June 1854.[5]

William's father remarried in July of 1855,[6] and by the 1860 census, they were a family of seven.[7]

On 10 April 1870, William married Loretta Hudson.[8] They settled in Mill Creek, Union, Ohio, where their first two daughters were born.[9][10]

The issue of the children's inheritance from their mother was still being addressed in the courts. On 31 March 1876, William and his sisters filed an "Exception to Account" of their father, stating that he had not used all of the proceeds from the sale of the land for their upbringing and further, that he had actually been paid more than the stated $666.66 2/3 for the property.[11] Mathias responded in a court filing the following day saying that, after expenses, there remained a balance of $565.48 2/3. He said he did not keep a precise account of expenses because these were his own children, and he was willing to distribute to each of them the sum of $188.50. There was no mention of his having sold the property for more than the appraised amount.[12]

By they 1880 census, the family had grown to six, and they were living in Jerome, Union, Ohio, where William worked in a tile factory. Their next door neighbors were Jenny and John Hudson, William's sister and possibly Loretta's brother.[13]

By the following year, the young family had returned to Delaware County, settling in Liberty Township, where their sons William H. and Frank J., and their daughter Almeda, were born.[14][15][16]

The 1900 census of Liberty Township showed them on their farm with William and Almeda. Willam appears to have still been working on the farm, with his son's help. Of the seven children born to Loretta, only five were yet living.[17]

Ten years later, William and Loretta were still on the farm, and Elizabeth's 13 year old daughter Anna was enumerated with them.[18] And in 1920, the census indicates that William was farming "several farms" though he was in his 70s.[19]

William had a fatal stroke on the evening of 2 January 1925 at his home. His death certificate indicates that he was to be buried at a cemetery in nearby Powell, Ohio.[20] To date, there is no memorial for him on Find a Grave.

Research Notes

William's date of birth varies, depending on the record. His death certificate says 8 May 1848, his 1900 census says May 1851[17]. However, earliest census records give him point to 1849 as his year of birth.[1] Finally, his father's guardianship petition says, "William Pounds who will be five years old on the 17th day of May 1854,"[4] which seems to be the most reliable source.
