Biography

George Cyril Powell was born on 29 May 1889 at Sheffield, Yorkshire. His date of birth was recorded in the 1939 Register.

In 1891 George was living with his parents Charles and Ann Powell at 32 Clun Rd, Brightside Bierlow, Sheffield. He was aged 11 years. [RG13/4376 149 Pg 40]

In the 1911 census George was living with his widowed mother Ann and 2 younger brothers at 283 Ellesmere Rd, Sheffield. Aged 21, he was working as a clerk in the spring works, where, out of interest, they made spiral springs. It was George who completed the census paper.

George Cyril Powell married Edith Ellen Thropp in 1913 [Marriage Dec Qtr 1913/Sheffield 9c 1319].

This couple had three children named Eunice born 2 February 1915, Joan born 1919 and William Stanley born 25 June 1921.

The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. The Register recorded each person's address, date of birth and occupation.
At that time this family was residing at 33 North Quadrant, Sheffield. George, aged 50, was employed as an assistant relieving officer. Edith was aged 49. Eunice, aged 24, was a clerk at the brass foundry. Her surname was later amended to her married name of Staley. The record for Joan remains closed at this time [2017]. William, aged 18, was a clerk at the steel works.

Edith Ellen Powell died in 1963 aged 73 years [Death Jun Qtr 1963/Sheffield 2d 65].

George Cyril Powell died on 13 December 1965 aged 76 years.
