William was born in 1778, in Henry County, Virginia. He was the son of Robert Edward Powell and Catherine Tuggle.

Her served during the War of 1812, as a Seargent in the 5th Regiment, Virginia Militia[1].

On 26 Sep 1814 in Franklin County, Virginia, he married Sarah Roe Newbill[2]. They settled in Franklin and had 4 known children.

  1. Mary Catherine Powell b. 1815 VA - d. 1893 WI, m. Patrick Ashley Bassett
  2. Nathaniel Josephus Powell b. 1817 VA - d. 1902 CA, m. Ann W. Almond
  3. John William Powell b. 1822 VA - d. 1908 MT, m. Harriet Mildred Dudley[3]
  4. Ann Elizabeth Powell b. 1825 VA - d. 1884 WI, m. Thomas Tarleton English

Research Notes

Further research is needed to confirm if this is the same William who married Sophia Hancock. If Sophia did not pass away until around 1828 (per her WikiTree Profile), then they must have obtained a divorce as he married Sarah Newbill in 1814. And, the children linked to William and Sophia, the youngest was born 14 Feb 1814. Yet, he married Sarah on 26 Sep 1814, just 6 months later? While all of this is possible, seems there may be a mix-up in the William's. Even the link provided below for the marriage to Sophia links to a different William on FamilySearch. But there are not any other records to prove or disprove all of this.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:
