Biography

J W Powell of McGregor died Sunday, November 27, 2005, in Temple, at the age of 85. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, December 1, 2005, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Steve Heyduck and Rev. Wayne Stork officiating. Graveside services and interment will be 3:00 P.M. Friday, December 2, 2005, at Wayland Cemetery near Breckenridge, under the direction of Cole Funeral Home, 1113 West Fifth Street, McGregor. Visitation will be 7 to 8 P.M. Wednesday at Cole Funeral Home.

Mr. Powell was born November 6, 1920, in Stamford, Texas, the son of John Whitten and Mary Ida Zelpha (Worley) Powell and attended school at Breckenridge. During World War II, from September 5, 1945 to January 18, 1947, he served his country in the United States Army and was discharged as a sergeant. He was decorated with the World War II Victory Medal of the Occupation Medal and was a member of the Bryant Oliver Post of the American Legion. On April 29, 1953, he married Maxine May Nickell in Wichita, Kansas at Grace Methodist Church. Through the years he was employed with the United States Government in many capacities to include a Quality Assurance Inspector with Hercules. In 1985, he retired. He was a former member of Grace Methodist Church in Wichita Kansas and currently a member of First United Methodist Church in McGregor. He enjoyed structure building , farming and fishing.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-two years, Maxine Powell of McGregor; two sons, Jay Eldon Powell of Wichita, Kansas, Dwane Dee Powell and wife Kelly of Lorena; two daughters, Gwen Kay Stanford of Huntsville, Carol Ann Love of Eddy; one brother, Oscar Powell of Healdton, Oklahoma; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
