Biography

William was born in 1806 in Pendleton District, South Carolina. He is the son of John Powell and Ann Rose. He passed away sometime after the census of 1880 in Jackson County, Kentucky.

15 Dec 1821 - William marries Nancy Lamb. Estill County, Kentucky.[1] This is extremely unusual because he is just 15 years old. But his older brother Michael married Sally Lamb earlier that year and the 1830 census shows William heading a household with four young children. Further, there were no other William Powells in the county at the time.

21 Mar 1825 - At the age of 19, William is granted 50 acres of land on Red Lick Fork in Estill County, Kentucky.[2]

1827 - William appears for the first time in the tax lists of Madison County, Kentucky. From this we can figure his birth year as 1806, a date that is confirmed by the census records.[3]

1830 - William appears for one year on the tax list of Estill County adjacent to his brother Abraham. He has 50 acres on Red Lick.[4] He is also found in the federal census that year with four young children.[5]

1840 - Madison County census. He is living near his brother Michael.[6]

1850 - The Madison County census is very difficult to read.

1852 - Jackson County is created from Estill, Madison, and other counties.

1860 - Jackson County census.[7]

Sometime after 1860 he marries a 2nd time, as the 1870 and 1880 census records have a different spouse named Mary F.

1870 - Jackson County Census [8]

1880 - Jackson County census.[9]
