Biography

From FindAGrave (unverified):

John Powell, the son of David Powell and Elizabeth Chalfant, was born 24 Feb 1741 near the Hephzibah Baptist Church in East Fallowfield Tp., Chester Co., PA. He married first to Agnes Shields, daughter of James Shields and Mary Chalfant. Agnes died on 22 Nov 1769 and John married second to Rachel Griffith, daughter of Rev. Abel Griffith. He was an amateur poet and his granddaughter, Rachel Powell (daughter of John G. Powell), compiled a book "Family Records of the Powells & Griffiths" (1866) which contains the many poems he wrote. He built a home of fieldstone on his farm in East Fallowfield, known as the John and Rachel Powell House, starting in 1794 (on the National Register of Historic Places). His surviving children were: Mary (1768 by first marriage), Abel (1786), John Griffith (1792), David Chalfant (1795), and Benjamin (1798). John and Rachel Powell are buried in the nearby Hephzibah Baptist Church Cemetery.

From 1793 to 1810, John served as a Deacon of the Brandywine Baptist Church.[1]
