Biography

Phoebe was born in 1812. She is the daughter of Lewis Powell and Mary Unknown.

From Yonge Street Monthly Meeting Register of Marriages:

Job Armitage of the Township of West Gwillimbury, County of Simcoe and province of upper Canada, Son of Amos Armitage and Mary his wife and Phebe Powel Daughter of Lewis Powel and Mary his wife, of the township of East Gwillimbury in the county of york and province aforesaid; having laid their intentions of marriage with each other before two monthly meetings of the religeous Society of friends, held at pickering and yonge Street in the province aforesaid; they having consent of parents, and nothing appearing to obstruct; their proposal of marriage was allowed by the meeting: These are to certify, that for the accomplishment of their intentions, this twenty fourth day of the tenth month in the year of our Lord one thousand Eight hundred and thirty three They the Sd Job Armitage and Phebe Powel appeared in a public meeting of Said Society, held at yonge Street and the Sd Job Armitage taking the Sd Phebe Powel by the hand, did on this Sollemn occasion declare, that he took her to be his wife, promising through Divine assistance, to be unto her a faithful and loving husband until Separated by death, or words to that effect; and then the Sd Phebe Powel, did, in like manner declare that she took the Sd Job Armitage to be her husband promising through Divine assistance, to be unto him a faithful and loving wife, until Separated by death or words to that import, And they the Sd. Job Armitage and Phebe Powel she according to the custom marriage, assuming the name of her husband as a farther confirmation thereof, did then and there, to these presents set their hands.

. .. to my Eldest Son William Powell all that certain Parcel or Tract of Land and Premises situated . . . in the Township of East Gwillimbury . . . I give and Devise . . . Twenty Acres of Land and Premises to my Son Jacob Powell . . . to my son Richard Powell the Sun of Twelve Pounds then Shillings . . . my Said Son Isaac Powell To make and Deliver unto him . . . the sun of one hundred and Twenty Five Pounds . . . to my Son Reuben Powell the sund of Twenty Five Pounds . . . to my Son Jacob Powell the Sum of Twenty Five Pounds . . . To Lewis Webster son of Abraham Webster and Lewis Tool son of Moses Tool Lot Number Twenty Seven . . . I give and Bequeath to Elijah Grout, Lewis P Grout Jan Grout and Ferdinand Grout children of Eliphalet Spofford Grout Each the Sum of Twelve Pounds then shillings . . .
