Elizabeth Powell was born 1 Jun 1842 in Kentucky, probably a slave of Owen Glass and Elizabeth Glass of Henderson, Kentucky. She died on 7 Feb 1917 in Henderson, Henderson, Kentucky.
The 1850 census of Henderson, Henderson, Kentucky reported Owen Glass 57, physician, born Kentucky, possessing $16,000 worth of real estate; also, wife Elizabeth H. Glass 46, born North Carolina, daughter Sarah H. Glass 19, and sons Robert T. Glass 16, Owen Glass 9, and Wynn D. Glass 4.[1] The 1850 slave schedule of Owen Glass in Henderson, Kentucky reported 13 enslaved people: 46 F B, 38 M B, 32 M M, 27 M B, 23 M B, 22 F M, 18 F B, 21 F B, 18 F B, 12 M B, 11 M B, 7 F B, 4 F B.[2] The person identified as 7 F B could be Elizabeth Powell.
On February 25 Feb 1858 when she was 16 years old, Elizabeth gave birth to a daughter, Maria Powell. Maria Carr's Death Certificate (in which she is identified as Eliza Carr) stated that her father was Robert Glass of Henderson, Kentucky.[3] Elizabeth is known to be the mother of Maria Powell Carr, because the 1880, 1900, and 1910 censuses listed Lizzie/Elizabeth Powell as mother-in-law in the household of James A. Carr and Maria Carr.
The 1860 Slave Schedule for widow E.H. (Elizabeth H.) Glass reported 13 people, including 18 F B and 3 F B who could be Elizabeth Powell and Maria Powell.[4]
The 1870 census records concerning Elizabeth and Maria Powell are difficult to interpret. On 28 Jul 1870 in City of Henderson, KY, first ward, lived the widow Elizabeth Glass 68, with her stepson Robert Glass 34, lawyer, and her married stepdaughter Sarah with husband, John Mallory, and 4 young children. They were all coded White. Also in the household were 4 people of color: Lucy Terry 28 cook, Peter Terry 5 likely her son, Jenny Rudy 20 domestic servant, and Lizzy Powell 12 nurse. It seems certain that Lizzy Powell is the child of Robert Glass, born in 1858 to Elizabeth Powell, being called by her mother's name, and defined as nurse to Robert's nieces and nephews.[5]
In addition, on 12 Aug 1870 in City of Henderson, KY, 3rd ward, lived William F. Barret 46, farmer, with his wife and children. They were all coded White. Also in the household were Elizabeth Powell 30 F M cook and Ann W. Powell 9 F M house servant.[6] Is this Elizabeth Powell mother of Maria Carr? The 1870 census does not appear to offer any other Elizabeth Powell, born about 1842, non-White, and located in the Henderson area. And then who is Ann W. Powell? Is she Maria in a duplicate record, named differently and reported 3 years too young? Records show that two of Maria Carr's sons identified their mother as Ann M. or Anna M. Powell on their social security registration forms. The mystery is unresolved.
Daughter Maria Powell married James Alexander Carr about 1875 probably in Henderson, Kentucky.[7]

Alex Carr 47, house carpenter, with wife Marion (sic) Carr 42, children Burchard 22, John J. 20, Herman 18, Annie 14, Janie 14, Kittie 12, Rosa 8, and Emma 5, all coded Black. [7]
