Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Attaway Powell is a part of US Black heritage.

Attaway was born before 1833. He was enslaved by Jeremiah Powell (abt.1792-abt.1839) on the Pleasant Grove Plantation, Leon County, Florida. Powell is being used temporarily until his actual name can be determined.

In 1833, Benjamin Chaires gives security for Jeremiah Powell, and Powell uses his slaves for security in a transaction that appears to be a loan to pay off a debt to Nathan Powell. Attaway was one of those slaves.[1]

Attaway appears to have been returned to Powell as he is listed in his will in 1838.[2]
