Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Walter Powell is a part of US Black heritage.

Walter Powell was born about 14 February 1876 in Bedford City, Virginia.[1] See Research Notes. His birth place is shown as West Virginia in the 1930 and 1940 census records. He was the son of Henry Powell and Louise Hurt.[2]

In the 1900 census, Walter was recorded as 24 years old, head of household, living and farming in Falls Church District, Fairfax, Virginia, with his siblings John, Mary, Gertie, Eugene and Arthur.[3]

Walter, age 25, married 22 year old Hattie Randolph on 1 August 1901 in Mount Pleasant, Fairfax, Virginia.[4] In 1910, Walter and Hattie were recorded in the census living on Leesburg Pike in Falls Church, Fairfax, Virginia. They didn't have any children and his brother-in-law Frank Randolph, age 32, lived with them. Walter worked on a dairy farm and Frank worked at a grist mill.[5] The 1930 and 1940 censuses show the couple living on Columbia Pike in Falls Church, Fairfax, Virginia.[6][7]

Walter passed away on 27 June 1947 at his home in Alexandria, Fairfax County, Virginia and was buried on 1 July 1947 at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery, Fairfax County, Virginia.[2][8]

Although the 1910 Census for Walter and Hattie Powell has Frank Randolph indexed as Son-in-law, I believe it may say Bro-in-law. This would be supported by the fact that it also says Walter and Hattie had no children.

I agree, if you look at the original census, it shows "bro-in-law", but was indexed by FamilySearch and Ancestry.com as "son-in-law".
