Julia was born about 1800 (according to her age at death). She passed away in 1860.
Julia Powell married Matthew Bowles Alt on 20 December 1827 at St Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney.[1] According to the marriage licence they were both living in the hamlet of Ratcliff.[2]
They had children Maria (b. abt 1828) and Matthew (b. abt 1830). The birth records for the children have not been found.
Her husband died in 1836.
Julia was listed in the 1841 census as "Julia Holt", residence London Road, St George The Martyr in Surrey, living on independent means, her age recorded as 30+, with daughter Julia(sic) [should be Maria] age 15, and son Matthew 12.[3]
In 1846 her son 15 year old Matthew was tragically killed when he was run over by a cart. A newspaper report of his inquest had his address Chester Terrace, Lambeth Road, Kennington, in London.
In the 1851 census Julia was lodging at Morpeth St, Bethnal Green, Middlesex: she was an annuitant, widow.
Death: Julia Bowles Alt, "widow of Matthew Bowles Alt Captain of the Royal Navy" died on 22 December 1860 at 28 De Beauvoir Crescent, Hoxton, Middlesex, England. Cause of death was Cerebral degeneration for some years with epileptic fits and occasional convulsions. Henry Harrison, the husband of her daughter Maria was the informant.[4]
