POWELL - Gatesville, Coryell Co., Tex., June 4 - John I. Powell died at his residence, two miles from town, yesterday and was buried here to-day. He was an old pioneer, having settled in this county forty years ago.

My information says he was born on June 6, 1861 in Gatesville, Coryell County, Texas and that he died on December 22, 1935 in Santa Anna, Coleman County, Texas. I have a note: Roach shows up in the 1880 Coryell Co., CENSUS livingwith hisfamily (age 19), next door to the Arrowoods, including Josie, age 16.

He married someone in my wife's family on August 18, 1877 (LDS has 1888). Josephine "Josie" Arrowood, the person Roach married, was the daughter of Anderson D. Arrowood & Dicie Carson. She was born on May 17, 1864 in Gatesville,CoryellCounty, Texas.

Coryell County, Texas Families, p 479: John Ingram Powell, third child of John Anderson and Charlotte T. Lane Powell, was born near Springhill, Maury County, Tennessee, March 14, 1829. In 1835 his family removed to MadisonCounty,Mississippi and later to Biloxi, Harrison County, Mississippi. John Ingram Powell was a riverboat captain on the Mississippi River, met and married Mary Elizabeth Bridget Smith who was born in Ireland and came to the UnitedStates withher parents. John Ingram Powell and Mary Elizabeth Bridget Smith later came to Coryell County, presumably because of the glory stories of Texas and probably chose Coryell County because his father was already there. Johnwas a farmer.

All children of John Ingram Powell and Mary Elizabeth Bridget Smith Powell were born in Coryell County. Their children were Charlotte Ingram, John Fletcher, Sarah Laughter, Richard Roach, William Smith, Robert Lee, Phebe Eliza,Mabel,Mary Emma, and Thomas Jackson Powell. John Ingram died in Coryell County on June 3, 1897. Bridget lived until December 3, 1916. Both are buried in the Gatesville Cemetery.
