1. THOMAS1 POWELL was born 1730 in Culpepper Co. VA, and died 1809 in Estill Co., Ky. He married ANN ANDERSON BUSH.[6] She was born 1740.
Children of THOMAS POWELL and ANN BUSH are: i. ANNE2 POWELL, m. (1) PETER WOOLERY; m. (2) JOHN MAXWELL, June 14, 1821, Estill Co., Ky. ii. AMBROSE POWELL, b. January 18, 1761, Culpepper Co. VA; d. 1846, Estill Co., Ky; m. (1) NANCY CAVENDER; m. (2) SALLY BRITT, September 08, 1783, Orange Co., VA; b. 1760; d. 1845. Notes for AMBROSE POWELL: Ambrose Powell made oath: that in the latter part of 1780, his father, Thomas Powell, was drafted in the Militia from Orange County, Virginia. That he went as substitute in his father's place and served out the tour of about 2 months. Robert Miller was his Captain and Thomas Barbour was Colonel. That they marched to, and were stationed at Fredericksburg, Virginia. This is where he was discharged. As soon as Ambrose reached home, he was then drafted on his own behalf. George Waugh was his Captain, and Barbour was Colonel. They marched to Old Richmond and Ambrose was there when the British burned the warehouses at Manchester. They then marched from Richmond to Four Mile Creek and from there to Mobbins Hill and then back 2 miles of Richmond. Ambrose was one of 300 men that were then sent back to Mobbins Hill under the command of Major Boyce, where they helped destroy a wooden bridge to prevent the British from crossing. Ambrose continued on to several more places until he was discharged from this tour at a place called Dandridge's Old Fields. He was out about 2 months. As soon as he got home he was sent out on a 3rd tour of duty as a substitute for Reuben Clark of Culpepper County. Joseph Early was his Captain. Captain Sampson Matthes as Colonel in General Steven's Brigade. They marched down to Richmond, thence to New Castle to the mouth of Chickahominy and to Williamsburg, on the Barracks. Ambrose served this tour two months or more and was discharged below Williamsburg. After this tour, he continued in the Army for a while longer in the Artillery Company commanded by a Frenchman by the name of Datton. He was with this Company for two weeks or more. After the war, Ambrose moved from Culpepper County, Virginia to Albemarle County, Virginia. He only resided in Albemarle County for about a year and a half, and then moved to Kentucky.
From "Estill Co. Circuit Court Records" 5 Oct. 1827, James Keas and Milly Keas his wife VS Isaac Mize, witness for Keas were, AMBROSE POWELL.
In Estill County, Kentucky, on August 20, 1832, Ambrose Powell at the age of 71 years, made oath that he had been in Kentucky for 40 or 50 years and had been residing in Estill County for 30 or 40 of those years.
April 1833, Commonwealth vs. William Lee, In August 1832 did carry and steal from the possession of James Muir of Clark Co., a Negro woman slave. Witness for Lee.......AMBROSE POWELL, .......
1 Nov. 1833, AMBROSE POWELL vs. Jeremiah King, Jr., assault and battery, beat, bruised and stump the said Powell. Sues for $500, dismissed.
