George Richmond Powell was born on 7th January 1832 in Richmond, on the Hawkesbury River north west of Sydney in New South Wales (Australia). He was the third son of Edward Powell and Mary Robinson. [1]
George made his way to New South Wales' northern rivers district, where he met and courted Mary Small. Could they have known that George's paternal grandparents, Edward Powell (c1762-1814) and Elizabeth Fish (c1766-1836), and Mary's maternal grandmother, Mary O'Brien (later Patfield) (c1772-1853), had travelled to New South Wales together aboard the Bellona in 1792-93; the Powell's as free settlers and Mary under serious conviction? The two families had settled in far-flung districts of the penal colony from the beginning. Could the two young Bellona belles have kept in touch by writing letters, and their children have also done so? Or was it just one of those 'cosmic coincidences'? George married Mary in 1859 in Tyndale, the Small Family home on Woodford Island, in the Clarence River. [2] Living in that local region and, it appears, at Tyndale from 1860, Mary and George had ten children:
George passed away, aged 76 years, on 22nd August 1908 in Tyagarah, near Byron Bay, New South Wales. [3] He was buried in Bangalow Cemetery, Bangalow. He was survived by Mary, who passed in 1924 and is buried beside him, and nine of their children and their families.
