Biography

William H. Powell is one who has reaped the usual rewards that fall to the pioneer in any practical industry. Settling near Antelope in Sacramento county in 1879, in the following year he planted three almond trees on his place, doing this more in the manner of an experiment than with vivid hopes of establishing a large branch of agricultural industry. He was in a short time convinced of the financial possibilities that lay in almond culture, set out more trees, and by two considerable plantings in 1889 and 1897 has brought his almond acreage up to twenty acres of bering trees, the yield from which is the most profitable product of his ranch. He has a beautiful homestead of forty-three acres, nearly half of which, it is seen, is devoted to almod growing.

A man of self-attainment, who has trained himself for the responsibilities of the world, who by the death of his father, was left when an infant solely dependent on his mother's support, Mr. Powell was born in Greenup county, Kentucky, February 6, 1847, and at the age of six years went with his mother to Coles county, Illinois, where he grew up and received his rather meager education in the subscription schools of that period. In 1866, in company with his mother and step-father, he moved to Jasper county, Missouri, where, on February 1, 1868, he married Miss Sarah C. Rowland, who was born in Indiana. In 1873, Mr. Powell came to California, and during the following six years resided for varying lengths of time in northern San Joaquin county, in Butte county, in Yuba county, and in Sacramento county, and in 1879 settled permanently at his present homestead near Antelope.

Mr. Powell is a Democrat politically, with leanings toward independence when it comes to casting his ballot; he and his wife are interested members of Roseville Grange No. 161, P. of H., and his wife is likewise a member of the Presbyterian church and the ladies' aid society at Roseville, both being held in high regard in the social circles of the community.^[1]
