Ella Powell was the adopted daughter of Larkin and Margaret (Coyle) Powell. She was born in Kentucky in 1886. Three younger siblings were born to her parents: Maude, Leslie, and Lillie Powell. Her father, Larkin, died when she was 10 years old. The following year, her mother married Ambrose Williams. The 1900 US Census shows Ambrose, Margaret and the four children, and a baby, Oscar Williams, living on a farm in Jackson County, Kentucky.
Margaret died in 1901. On February 14 of that year, on her fifteenth birthday, Ella married Margaret's brother, Newton J. Coyle. She was his second wife, and she became step-mother of Willie and Charlie, children from Newton's first marriage. Newton and Ella's children were Albert, Maud, Alfred J., Alson C., Alvis N., and Elmer J. Coyle. In 1910, Newton and Ella were living in Berea, Kentucky, where Newton owned a general store. Because the Powell children had lost both their parents, Ella's younger siblings, Leslie and Lillie, were also living with their sister and husband at that time. By 1920, the family was again living in Jackson County, where Newton was farming. Newton died in 1921.
