Grant, born September 2, 1819,[1] was named after his father Dr. Grant Powell.[2] He was educated at Upper Canada College. During the Upper Canada Rebellion of 1837-38, he served as a lieutenant in the Incorporated Militia. He joined the civil service in 1839.[3]
In 1881 he worked as a civil servant in Ottawa, Ontario.[4] At the age of 69, he held the position of Under Secretary of State.[5][6]
He died January 27, 1904, in Ottawa and was buried at Beechwood Cemetery.[7]
