Biography

George William Dowdy (Powers) was the youngest son of William C. Dowdy and Lucy L. T. Dowdy. He was born in 1837 in Hickman, Kentucky. His father died in the year of his birth.

George's mother married Arthur N. Powers in 1845, and her three children joined an already bustling household. In the 1850 census, they were listed with the last name of Powers, although whether they were officially adopted by Mr. Powers is unknown. One thinks not since they used their birth name later in life.

Given the blended family situation, a previous researcher entered the Dowdy children with the last name of Powers. For that reason, their Wiki-ID contains that last name. I am adjusting the last name situation in the data capture section of their profiles, and MAY change the Wiki-IDs at a later date.

In the 1860 census,^[1] he was living in Stewart County, Tennessee with his brother Watson, both of whom were dry good merchants. In reviewing that census page, we also see Arthur (Author) Powers, his wife L. T. Powers (George William's mom); Martha Powers, their daughter; Rebecca Dowdy, George's sister; as well as William Powers, 21, laborer, and James Timmons or Simmons, 8, both of whom's relationships are unknown at this writing.

In the 1900 census, we see George William listed as G. W. Dowdy. He is widowed at that time, but his "sister-in-law" Manha Powers is in the household. It might be assumed that the relationship was actually step-sister", however a marriage record was found for George William Dowdy and Clara Powers.^[2]
