Levi Pownall[1][2][3] was born 23 June 1783 in Bucks, Pennsylvania[1][2]In the 1850 and 1860 census the Pownalls were lived in Sadsbury, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, United States.[1][2]
Levi owned the house that was home to the William and Eliza Parker family in Christiana Pennsylvania. It was located in the Pownall tract to the southwest of Christiana in Lancaster County, and was the site of the Christina Riot of 11 September 1851.[4]
"Farther down the Long Lane to the northwest, past the orchard and the creek about a mile and a half away, was the residence of Levi Pownall, a Quaker farmer who rented the stone house to its occupants.[5]
Levi's wife Sarah, a white neighbor of the Parkers, had stopped by the Parkers the evening of 10 September 1851 to warn about a raid, suggesting the Black folks might want to flee to Canada fearing there would be violence. Parker asked her to keep the white folks away for that reason, saying it was not their fight. He did not want harm to come to their friends and neighbors should there be violence. [4][6]
